Billy Joel & Elton John Tour 2009
I was able to see this show back in 2002 thanks to Carrie who got tix as a super secret surprise for me and back then I thought I would never again get the chance to see these two legends of the rock world perform together again. Thankfully I did get to see them, March 26th, 2009 here in Phoenix, the Face 2 Face tour again blew me away.
My only comment is that with the incredible catalog of music that these two guys have between them, Elton really did the crowd an injustice by performing some of his deeper tracks that even I as a former classic rock radio DJ didn’t recognize.
Joel is my hero, his energy, jokes with the crowd, interaction with everyone in the audience and on stage shows why he is the consumate entertainer. I was also pleased that Joel performed “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant”, my all time favorite Billy Joel song that he doesn’t often do, I could have left right after that song.
Each performed together at the start and end of the show plus played about an hour of their own music, the last scene of the concert was them playing together for the second time taking turns singing each others lyrics and it’s funny how in many cases Billy sings Elton songs better than Elton and vice versa. During this session they also did a few covers of Beatles songs including “Back in the USSR” and “Birthday”.
Piano Man concluded the show, no surprise there, sung by both artists.
Now on to the pics, not my best work, only had the chance to bring my little Nikon S610 into the show, but captured some good stuff, out of maybe 150 pics, these were the best, but I also got some video from the cam, which I am going to try to edit into a quick piece if it works and post it here.
As always a click of the image takes you to the album.
